The Laboratoire d'étude de l'architecture potentielle (LEAP) Research Group of the School of Architecture at l'Université de Montréal presented their second Student Research/Creation Competition: Rethinking and Redefining Social Housing in Montreal's City Centre.
Led by Professor Anne Cormier, as part of a Research/Creation Grant funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the L.e.a.p. competition program challenges teams of architecture students (each team also has the option to include a student from another field) to think about social housing as a space for creation, innovation, and criticism, in our Canadian city centres.
Fifteen teams, of 3 or 4 students each, were chosen to participate in this Research/Creation competition which was open to Master Students at Canadian universities. Eligible students were required to be admitted to or attending an accredited architecture school in Canada or have graduated in fall 2006 or winter 2007.
$40 000 was distributed amongst fifteen selected teams, including $2000 to each team that completed the second phase of the competition. Additionally, prizes were awarded to the laureate projects: $5000 to the top team; $3000 to the second place team; $2000 to the third place team.
A jury, made up of prominent professionals in the fields of design, architectural theory, sociology, and public policy evaluated the entries.Jury deliberations, an exhibition, and a public presentation of the student projects took place as part of a public discussion on Social Housing and City Centres held in Montreal, October 6th 2007.
