The City of Calgary (The City) is thrilled to invite shortlisted proponents into the next stage of the Indian Residential School Memorial (IRSM) Design Competition where you will take on a challenge that will transform Calgary's Indian Residential School Memorial (IRSM) into a dynamic and exciting destination.
Indian Residential School Memorial (IRSM) is an important project to help advance the vision and strategic moves identified in the Greater Downtown Plan and the future of Downtown West.
The Greater Downtown Plan identifies five strategic moves to achieve a resilient and vibrant downtown for everyone with welcoming neighbourhoods, active streets, and well-used public spaces. Embedded in the plan are the goals of the future Indian Residential School Memorial (IRSM) (previously known as Downtown West River Promenade):
1. Improve the Bow River promenade and pathway system from Eau Claire to 14 Street S.W.
2. Create a better connection between the neighbourhood and the Bow River.
3. Create a better connection between the pathway and the edge of the Bow River.
4. Create more green space.
5. Consolidate and review land use for fragmented City-owned parcels.
With the Indian Residential School Memorial (IRSM) Design Competition, The City is giving shortlisted proponents the opportunity to repurpose this unused space into park areas and active modes facilities, better serving the needs of Calgarians while protecting the natural edge of the Bow River.
The City is looking for bold and innovative ideas that will truly transform this area into a vibrant and thriving destination in proponents concept submissions.
