Saint-Laurent en mouvement / Saint-Laurent in motion

2013
Montréal, Quebec, Canada
  • Architecture for culture, research, sport or leisure
  • Civil engineering
In the wake of the "Saint-Laurent in Motion" project, the borough of Saint-Laurent is launching a two-stage anonymous competition to select a team that will be able to carry out a video projection project on the façade of Saint-Laurent Church. Through the meeting of ideas, the competition aims to produce innovative and quality solutions that will allow the selection of the best concept and, consequently, the designers who will be responsible for the project.

This design competition is in keeping with the commitments made by the City of Montréal and its partners in the 2007-2017 Action Plan - Montréal, Cultural Metropolis, which aim, among other things, to promote excellence in design and architecture through the widespread use of competitions and to contribute to the affirmation of Montréal as a UNESCO City of Design.

It is in this context that the Bureau du design de la Ville de Montréal is supporting the borough of Saint-Laurent in the development and implementation of this competition.

In view of the upcoming celebrations for the 375th anniversary of Montréal, the 125th anniversary of the founding of Saint-Laurent and the implementation of several external and internal projects, the borough of Saint-Laurent has identified as a priority in its 2012-2013 strategic plan the realization of an innovative, structuring and unifying project entitled "Saint-Laurent on the Move".

The goal of this project is to highlight the rich heritage, culture, sports, multiculture, nature and history of Saint-Laurent, as well as its high-quality services. It also aims to develop a greater sense of belonging among Saint-Laurent citizens, to arouse the interest of Montrealers and tourists and to encourage physical exercise.

A province-wide communications campaign will promote the tourism tools developed by the borough in 2013. These print, interactive or online tools will provide information on all the attractions and activities in Saint-Laurent, including the video projection that is the subject of this contest.

For the first tourist season, the theme will focus on the history and heritage of the area and the attractions concentrated in the Old Saint-Laurent. The video projection will be shown on the façade of the Saint-Laurent Church from mid-June 2013 to mid-September. The projection will last 15 minutes and will be presented every evening. Located in the historic and heritage district of the borough, the video projection will allow us to dive into the past of Saint-Laurent and also to illustrate the current mosaic of citizens and the multicultural character of Saint-Laurent.
