This competition, launched in 1994 by the Université de Montréal's Department of Building Services, proposed the extension and renovation of the Faculté d'aménagement pavilion, as well as the creation of a new landscaped public space integrated within the university campus. This therefore meant that the selected team had to demonstrate the capacity of creating a new university-appropriable ensemble linked at once to the Mount Royal heritage site and the surrounding neighbourhood. The foremost idea of the competition was that of an integrated project, calling upon a multi-disciplinary team of professionals.
By means of this competition, the Faculty of Planning not only desired to fulfill its quantitative and qualitative spatial needs for teaching and research, but also wished that their facilities eloquently reflect the academic objectives of the institution itself, which at the time included three schools, (architecture, landscape architecture, industrial design), and one institute (urban planning). In addition, this extension, renovation and creation of a landscaped public space had to be situated within its spatial frame, the fundamental aspects of which were; the extension of the main campus, insertion within the existing urban grid and the relationship with its immediate neighbour – the new pavilion of the École des Hautes Études Commerciales (HEC). The goal was to establish and encourage a collective appropriation of the new facilities to the university campus, by linking them simultaneously to the mountain heritage context and the activity of the adjacent neighbourhood. The project was made possible thanks to funding provided by the Québec Ministry of Education. The team composed of Saucier Perrotte architectes / René Menkes, architectes / Deshaies, Raymond / Blondin, Barone architectes-paysagistes was selected as winner of this competition. However, during the project's production, the University of Montréal's Department of Building Services chose the landscaping firm of Parent Latreille due to their experience in landscaping university pavilions.
