Organized as a student led response to honour the late Professor Margery Winkler, resTOre is a design competition that focuses on rejuvenating under utilized green spaces and open sites in Toronto, Ontario. The challenge is to redesign an existing site into a usable community space through architectural and landscape design.
Within the urban fabric of the city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, there are many empty brown-field sites and under-utilized or ineffective green spaces that have the potential to better serve the communities in which they exist. These spaces create the opportunity to re-define the connection between a community and its surrounding urban spaces. The site for this year's resTOre competition is located in the heart of the downtown core of Toronto within the Waterfront neighbourhood surrounded by the infrastructure of the Gardiner Expressway. Though this site may be constrained, it possesses great opportunity to be rejuvenated and revitalized for neighbouring community and visitor use.
The site for the 2010 competition is the open park space at the Bay Street/York Street off-ramp from the Gardiner Expressway wrapped by York Street and Queen's Quay near Waterfront Toronto. This site was chosen based on its ideal location within the waterfront community in Toronto and upon the lack of use by the local residents. This site offers a great opportunity for a creative design solution - it is a site that is challenged by its immediate context, the surrounding off-ramp from the Gardiner Expressway.
