University of British Columbia (UBC): University Boulevard Architectural Competition / Université de la Colombie-Britannique : Concours d'architecture du boulevard University

2004
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
  • Educational buildings
  • Urban spaces
  • University
This competition, launched on October 26th, 2004, was for the design of the University Boulevard buildings and open spaces situated at the entrance of the University of British Columbia campus. The Call for Entries of this competition saw 52 architectural firms from around the world submit their candidacy which were evaluated by a Short-List Committee to choose seven teams to participate each in an interview. Three finalists were selected to proceed to a Project Stage for the University Boulevard. Their projects, submitted at the end of March 2005, were exhibited at the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery. An on-line campus community poll took place parallel to this exhibition. After examining the three projects, the competition jury announced at the end of April 2005 that the winning team was that of Moore Ruble Yudell Architects and Planners in association with Hughes Condon Marler, Architects.

The site, divided into 5 parcels, had different programmatic needs. The competition brief specified that the project should develop the University Square, "principal point of arrival onto the campus". In addition, the building programme also included spaces for social activities, 4 or 5 theatres, retail, offices, university administration, housing and an information centre. The design of outdoor public spaces and buildings was to "provide a streetscape along University Boulevard" and also "convey a strong sense of place, promote interaction and provide social spaces and activities which create a University core".
